The Day We Filmed Music Without Borders

Having a connection to something bigger than ourselves makes us happier and healthier – I read that somewhere. I’m sure there’s scientific evidence to back this up (google?) but this just SEEMS to make sense, doesn’t it? It feels good when we’ve satisfied a feeling of purpose, and that’s exactly what happened at the San Diego/Mexican border on Oct. 13th, 2019, when a binational choir was formed and united two countries through song.

And well, it was kinda awesome…

Más Details

The cross border singalong was staged by Canadian duo Choir! Choir! Choir!, produced by ArtPower UC San Diego, and filmed by yours truly. As far as events go this was (and still is) the coolest thing I, personally, have ever been a part of. No contest. Just look at these happy faces!

For those that don’t know: The Toronto based music group, CHOIR! CHOIR! CHOIR!  is led by Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman and are no strangers to forming impromptu choirs. It’s kinda their thing. Check out some of their performances on youtube…even a few celebs have crashed the party!  (David Byrne, Patti Smith, and Rufus Wainwright to name a few.)

This specific event was meant to unify and highlight community within the San Diego/Mexico border regions…

And it did exactly that. With Nobu in Mexico and Daveed  in the US (and a tech team that was able to transmit audio signals back and forth between the two countries) magic happened.

First they waived to each other.

Then they practiced.

Then they sang…

“With a Little Help From My Friends” by the Beatles with a portion of the lyrics translated to Spanish – if this doesn’t give you goosebumps than you must not be human.

IT. WAS. BEAUTIFUL. But  the biggest emotional surprise was probably the impromptu “Hey Jude” Singalong at the end of the day…

I’m not crying, you’re crying!
